Darrell Rose | West African Master Percussionist

Darrell Rose has been a well-known, and much admired persona in the Charlottesville area for decades.  As a performer and teacher of traditional West African Drumming, his popularity, especially among younger people, often gave him the aura of a new-age Pied Piper.  During his own youth, Darrell had the privilege of studying with the internationally renowned African drummer, Babatunde Olatungi, of Nigeria.  This tutelage grew to study with world-renowned masters such as Mor Thiam and Abdou Kunta, both of Senegal.  Eventually leading up to Darrell joining Bob Marley’s iconic reggae group The Wailers.  Throughout the years as a master percussionist, Darrell has touched several continents with his rhythmic stylings.  His work on behalf of the U.S. State Department is critically acclaimed in several West African countries, including Guinea and Sierra Leone. Becoming a ‘master-drummer’ meant passing down the rhythms of the drum.  Sharing with our future generations became a priority for Darrell Rose.  Now, several thousand students-along with several prestigious awards later, you will still ‘Dr. D’ driving up and down our back roads travelling school to school, just to share his gift, with our children.
