Conscious City Conference
Healing the individual; healing the collective -- tomorrow’s Charlottesville starts with each of our journeys.

As our opening track, this conference takes us on an intellectual and an experiential journey through healing. We all experience suffering in our lives – physical ailments, mental stress, emotional pain, societal pressures – and it’s up to us to decide how we handle it. The process of understanding, accepting, forgiving, and ultimately healing ourselves is a lifelong journey. How can you experience wholeness and happiness on an ongoing basis?

We explore a variety of proven ways we can heal ourselves and increase our awareness and happiness -- from meditation and mindfulness to plant medicines (inc. psychedelics) and guided practices such as counseling, yoga, energy healing, hypnosis, and more. Along the way, we will explore ideas about what is meant by “consciousness,” whether any part of your consciousness might survive death, how to bring more awareness to all parts of your life, and how you can meaningfully increase joy and fulfillment in your day-to-day activities and truly flourish.

Note: This conference is a ticketed event. To create your event schedule here on Sched you must first purchase your tickets on Eventbrite. Click here to purchase your ticket. (All Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can)

Society & Justice Conference Tomorrow Talk: Financial Access & Empowerment
How can cross-sector partners come together to address issues of financial access, so that more members of the community can start businesses and fulfill  entrepreneurial ambition?

This facilitated conversation with The Fountain Fund & The Community Investment Collaborative explores these important connections and the future of Greater Charlottesville. It is a continuation of the “Tomorrow Talks” series; a yearlong Tom Tom initiative designed to connect leaders across our city. These energizing, facilitated conversations are designed to make connections, build trust, and inspire new collaborations. Each conversation features a vibrant mix of entrepreneurs, nonprofit and civic leaders, educators, and community organizers. However, the series is not about anyone’s resume. It’s about friends and neighbors who get to know each other and build trust.

For this special edition, we’ll connect and build relationships amongst professionals and diverse community interests who work year-round to bring opportunities to more of the community.

This session is Invitation Only. If you would like to be involved, please email Teira Farley teira@cicville.org to inquire about registration.

Inclusion as the Outcome of DEI Efforts: Moving Beyond Lip Service

Inclusion. By definition it means creating an inclusive environment where people from different backgrounds feel valued, respected, and empowered requires intentional efforts from all members of the organization. But what does it mean in the context of business and organizations? Does everyone want it? How do we make it happen?

Conscious City Conference: Framing the Conversation | What is Healing? Embodiment & Connection
This experiential session kicks off the Conscious City Conference and invites the audience to reflect on their own healing journey, arrive in the present moment with everyone else, and share an understanding of the framework for the day ahead: facilitated conversations, keynotes, workshops, and healing sessions.

This is a new kind of conference for Charlottesville, one that is helping explore a framework for “healing,” and what does it mean for a City to be conscious, healthy, and whole? By discussing and experiencing the modalities that inform healing: yoga, breath work, therapy, coaching, exercise, and plant medicine, we see what healing looks like. We also start to understand the barriers to experiencing them on a larger scale.

Note: This conference session is a ticketed event. To create your event schedule here on Sched you must first purchase your tickets on Eventbrite. Click here to purchase your ticket. (All Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can)

Conscious City Conference: Healing the Community | Access, Knowledge, and Empathy
Hurt people hurt people, but healed people heal people.

This panel explores the dynamic relating of healing individuals and healing society. We know that the collective can’t be healed without healed individuals. But it is very hard to have centered, grounded, open and authentic individuals when so much of the structures of our society work against that healing, especially in communities of color.

This panel explores the role that community plays in our individual journeys toward healing. Trauma is experienced in different ways and to different degrees by different communities; and the resources for healing are also not evenly distributed. What can a Conscious City do to expand access, knowledge and empathy to foster more healing.

Conscious City Conference: Conscious Dying | Cremation, Natural Burials, and Death Doulas
What does it mean to die with dignity? What does it mean to die with friends and family in a space of peace about the future?

This discussion sheds light on end-of-life care and planning, from what the “death doula” can provide, to options for green burial after death. Topics typically that communities and individuals can find too upsetting or challenging to face.
By normalizing conversations surrounding end-of-life planning and care, this panel of caregivers hopes to inspire knowledge and informed decisions about death will result in greater quality of life for families across our community.

Conscious City Conference: Showing Love: Gratitude and the Gift of Presence for Caregivers
This session is for caregivers and healers, defined broadly as anyone who has the intention of helping others in the wellness arena and makes an effort to do so (e.g. health care workers, teachers, massage therapists, body workers, mindful movement or yoga instructors).

We invite you into an engaging concoction of sharing, listening, and experiential learning on the power of gratitude for personal wellness and for deepening connection with Self, Life, and Community. Participants are likely to come away with an enhanced awareness of the science of gratitude and an embodied understanding of how gratitude may help them reinvigorate their resiliency, love, and faith in a world that is also full of pain and suffering.

This workshop is highly participatory and may include meditation, mindful listening with a partner and gratitude writing practices.

As a Russian immigrant to the United States with Ukrainian roots, Polina is grateful for the opportunity to be in Charlottesville at this time. In this session, she will share from personal experience why she persists to cultivate lightness and optimism despite the heaviness and uncertainty that is present. And bowing deeply to the collective wisdom in the group, the session will hold space for participants to share their experiences with gratitude, what holds us back from cultivating gratitude, and how we may most seamlessly integrate this wisdom into our daily lives. As a close to the session, participants will be gifted the opportunity to write a card for their future selves as a way to capture and carry forth the blessings of the day.

Conscious City Conference: Sacred Ceremonies | The Effective Usage of Plant Medicine
“There is an almost sensual longing for communion with others who have a larger vision. The immense fulfillment of the friendships between those engaged in furthering the evolution of consciousness has a quality almost impossible to describe.” - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

RELAX—RELEASE—ALLOW

How we prepare for a plant medicine ceremony has everything to do with what we will receive from the experience. If handled properly, one can achieve unparalleled results within their life, often releasing an individual from years of suffering, both physically and emotionally. In a recent study of nearly 300 people who took plant medicines as outlined in this presentation, seventy-eight percent reported, “It was the greatest experience of my life.” This response was true even for those who have taken plant medicines many times before.

Note: This conference session is a ticketed event. To create your event schedule here on Sched you must first purchase your tickets on Eventbrite. Click here to purchase your ticket. (All Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can)

Technology for Good Conference: Changing the Face of Angel Investing
Angel investors play a critically important role for early-stage startups, helping founders with their knowledge, network and funding. But an estimate of angel investors in the US indicates that 87% are White and 78% are male. How do those demographics impact the venture community? What voices and perspectives still need to be heard in angel investing? What challenges do founders who are female or people of color (or both) need to overcome?

Our panelists will share their experiences in the angel investing world, how they made their mark, and what obstacles remain to create a more diverse and effective angel investing community.

2023 HireVA x Tom Tom Festival Career Expo
Innovation is at the center of many workplaces in Central Virginia, which is why the UVA Career Center and the Tom Tom Festival are partnering to bring a Career Expo to the 2023 Festival. Strategically nested into the Thursday Technology for Good Track, this Expo will pull together Central Virginian employers, students, and community members. Employers will be able to talk about hiring opportunities and promote their organization’s brand throughout the area. Students will be exposed to organizations and company representatives that could become their future employers.

Hosted by the UVA Career Center, Virginia Career Works - Piedmont, and the Central Virginia Partnership for Economic Development, this HireVA event will be spread across multiple locations on Main Street transforming the Downtown Mall into a career exploration campus. There will be employers there from numerous industries, including renewable energy, biotechnology, data, and more. Stop by the Downtown Mall from 1-4 PM on Thursday, April 20 to learn more about organizations right in Charlottesville’s backyard!

Participating businesses include:
  • Green Careers: Environmental Sustainability Focused organizations will be hosted in UVA's Environmental Resilience Institute
  • Start-ups: Local and Regional Tech Start-ups will be hosted in UVA's Catalyst Accelerator
  • All Other Companies: Companies and organizations across a variety of sectors - Healthcare, Biotech / Life Sciences, Business, Government, Public Services, and Non-Profits will be hosted in CODE and on the downtown mall.
All are welcome at this event, but employers are primarily advertising entry-level and internship employment opportunities that are targeting local universities, community colleges, and high school students.

If you are an employer interested in participating in the Career Expo, sign up HERE.

Tech Treks
We cannot fully engage with the Tom Tom Festival’s 2023 theme of FUTURE FORWARD without involving future generations. That’s why Charlottesville-based employers are opening their doors to local students. On Thursday mornings, companies located near the Downtown Mall are hosting guided tours of their facilities and walking students through a day in the life of their employees.

Students from the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Charlottesville City Schools, and Albemarle County Public Schools will be able to learn more about local businesses and ask questions to companies that are on the cutting edge of their respective industries. The Tech Treks for the day are aligned with the larger Tom Tom themes including Climate & Energy, Biotechnology, and AI & Data. This opportunity will give Central Virginian students real-world applications of what they are learning in the classroom.

Bonus Event: UVA Women in Computer Science (WiCS) Hackathon Presentation
Join us in the UVA Environmental Institute after the Cville Tom Tom Festival Career Expo to hear from the winners of the UVA Women in Computing Sciences EcoHacks Hackathon. These students competed in a 10 hour hackathon at UVA on April 15 to design, build, and create apps, tools, and websites focused on upcycling old ideas, sustainability, efficiency, and the environment. Hear from the winners across six categories about how they are using their technical skills to build products to positively impact our planet. What are the issues they are concerned about and how do they envision using technology to find solutions? Their innovative solutions for sustainability issues will inspire all of us!

The winners from each of the six categories (Best Beginner Hack, Best Overall Hack, Best UI/UX Design, Best Sustainability Hack, Best ReHack, Microsoft's Most Innovative Hack) will present their design process, ideas and ultimate solutions. Come support and celebrate these students who are excited to use their technical skills for good! Reception following.

This event is FREE and Open to the Public. Click here to R.S.V.P.

Technology for Good: What’s Next in the Green Revolution? The State of Cville’s Renewable Energy Innovation
With mass electrification and higher living standards, global power consumption is expected to triple in the coming decades—making the nation’s target of decarbonizing the power grid by 2035 feel particularly ambitious. The United States needs to rapidly accelerate deployment of clean energy, quadrupling its annual growth rate of wind and solar power by 2030. So is this 2035 goal even achievable? Learn about the opportunities and barriers to meeting this target from some of the industry’s leaders, based right here in our hometown.

Charlottesville has evolved into an unexpected renewable energy epicenter, now home to more than a dozen companies whose technologies range from residential solar and energy efficiency to vehicle-to-grid bidirectional EV charging, and gigawatt-scale green fuels. Together, these pioneers are building the energy industry of the future and accelerating the transition to a new energy economy.

This session features keynote remarks from Apex Clean Energy President and CEO Mark Goodwin and a panel discussion between Goodwin; Fermata Energy Co-Founder, CFO, and CSO John Wheeler; and Lumin Founder and President Alex Bazhinov, moderated by Apex Clean Energy Senior Vice President of Finance Ellen Balfrey.

Crowdfunded Pitch Night

The 10th Annual Crowdfunded Pitch Night showcases 10 aspiring entrepreneurs to the Charlottesville community, who will vote with their dollars. Flash pitches will share the contestant's vision with the community and inspire the crowd to action! The evening will conclude with a round of crowd voting -- YOU get to be involved! -- in support of the idea the crowd feels is most likely to be successful. The pool of money goes to the winner. This event connects culturally diverse and innovative members of the Charlottesville community to showcase Charlottesville as a hub for unity and opportunity.

Each finalist has the opportunity to raise funds both before and during the pitch night. ALL donations intended for a startup or project will go to that startup! Before the pitch night, there will be a donation portal open to contribute toward a project, and at the pitch night, the audience can purchase votes to support the projects that most inspire them. ALL monies intended for a startup will go to that startup.

In addition to the crowdfunded support, the Community Investment Collaborate (CIC) is sponsoring a grand prize winner to receive a max $5,000. A winner will be selected by a panel of judges. Additional prizes and support services from CIC and other local business owners may also be awarded.

Society & Justice Conference: Tomorrow Talk: Early Childhood Education
How can cross-sector partners come together to address the rising costs of childcare and create more equitable opportunities for our community's youngest learners?

This facilitated conversation with United Way of Greater Charlottesville explores important connections on early childhood education --- its importance, challenges, and opportunity ---  and the future of Greater Charlottesville.

This conversation is a continuation of the “Tomorrow Talks” series; a yearlong Tom Tom initiative designed to connect leaders across our city.

For this special edition with United Way, we’ll connect and build relationships amongst professionals and diverse community interests who work year-round to bring educational opportunities to more of the community.

This session is by Invitation Only. If you would like to be involved, please email Ben Wilkes (bwilkes@unitedwaycville.org) to inquire about registration

One Stop Shop: Reentry and Criminal Justice Reform Service Showcase
The “One-Stop Shop” is an efficient and convenient way to cover a wide range of needs of those who are formerly incarcerated. The events include food, music and access to services offered by many agencies and organizations such as the Department of Social Services, OAR, Region Ten, Goodwill Industries, New Beginnings, and the Fountain Fund. By combining this variety of organizations and services, we help ensure that when these individuals are released from prison, they will not return.

This free event is open to all members of the community (regardless of incarceration status) who are in need of the following services:
  • Medical & Mental Healthcare
  • Substance Abuse Counseling
  • Access to legal support
  • Reinstatement of licenses and health getting birth certificates
  • Financial literacy and support
  • Career counseling
  • Access to housing
  • Education and apprentices opportunities

Program History
The OSS started last summer when the state of Virginia’s Earned Sentence Credit law became effective on July 1, 2022. This law provided an opportunity to incarcerated individuals to reduce their sentences by participating in prison programs and demonstrating good behavior. Most of the individuals who qualified for this early release program were those who had been in prison the longest. The Charlottesville Albemarle Reentry Council (CARC) recognized that these individuals would require a wide range of needs and services upon reentering their Virginia communities. In response to this need, a committee of the CARC planned and implemented the One Stop Shop (OSS).

A Culture of Repair: The Beloved Community

Some of the most polarizing conversations in the public discourse are centered on issues of race, history, and storytelling. This panel explores the realities of building a multi-racial democracy, and continuing the work of repair from the wrongs of our history.

How does the work of understanding and repair become a more broadly understood and embraced effort across divides and backgrounds? What are the conversations that need to happen at every level of our neighborhoods, schools, communities, and institutions?

This panel will discuss how a deep understanding of history informs the policies and communities of today.

In partnership with FUN Cville, we’ll be heading to Common House for multi-level dance parties with different genres and DJs. So get your dancing shoes, and a fun outfit, and grab your friends! Bring all the best vibes for two nights out in the community.

For PARADISE, we’ll be supporting JUST HELP AFRICA, the non-profit efforts of Tom Tom Board Member, Eze Amos, and Dance Series Hosts, Tunji Soroye & Zikki Munyao, to bring resources to their communities in Nigeria.

Ages 21+

Note: This is a ticketed event. In order to create your event schedule you must first purchase your tickets on Eventbrite. Click here to purchase your tickets. (All Tickets are Pay-What-You-Can)

Panorama Natural Burial - Open House Event

The green burial movement is gaining traction in the United States as a sustainable, meaningful, and restorative option. Statistics abound describing the environmental impact of what we consider “traditional” burial, as well as other disposition methods in the United States. Green burial offers a sustainable alternative to such practices, urging people to take a hard look at what they are truly leaving behind, and empowering individuals in their end-of-life decision-making. Green burial prompts discussion around returning to the earth and how this is truly the most environmentally-friendly final disposition.

This launch event and open house will introduce Charlottesville to Panorama Natural Burial, a new business of Panorama Farms that provides an open and inclusive space to learn about green burial and make informed end-of-life decisions. In addition to being a final resting place for loved ones, Panorama Natural Burial plans to host a variety of small-scale community events. Our hope is to be a space for people to learn, gather, reflect, and connect in the Charlottesville area as we redefine and return death care to its ancient roots.

We’ll begin the day with a brief dedication ceremony (11 AM) followed by remarks about Panorama Natural Burial’s benefits to the county and the increasing awareness around end-of-life choices (12 PM). Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and blanket and enjoy the beautiful fields and forest, visit information stations, and take part in thought-provoking activities designed to encourage open conversation about death.

RAIN OR SHINE! Bar Golf: Charlottesville Launch Event

Rain or shine! BarGolf is ON!

BarGolf is a new activity for bars and breweries patrons that combines two entertaining and interactive experiences: minigolf and bar crawls. The BarGolf team is piloting this concept in partnership with TomTom, Champion Brewery, South Street, Fitzroy, and Passiflora in Downtown Charlottesville.

Don your best golf outfit, gather your fellow players, and take to the Downtown Mall to play a 4-hole round of minigolf at one of our favorite local spots! Come join us at Champion from 2-4pm to experience the BarGolf concept - there will be plenty of prizes, competition, and fun for all. See you on the green!

Created by locals PJ Harris, Logan Hutchinson, and David Cano-Mejia, the portable greens allow any bar or brewery to be converted into a mini-golf hole. The goal is to be a catalyst to drive more patrons to support their favorite breweries, restaurants, and bars by transforming the Downtown Mall into a walkable mini-golf course.
