Sean Mallon serves as Vice President of Commercialization at VIPC. In this role, he provides a strategic vision for the Commercialization Division’s mission, and he oversees the Commonwealth Commercialization Fund (CCF), a grant program that supports the commercialization of Virginia-based high-potential research and technology. Prior to transitioning to his current role in 2021, Sean served as the inaugural VP of Entrepreneurial Ecosystems at VIPC, where he developed and launched the Regional Innovation Fund, a grant program that supports Virginia’s regional entrepreneurial ecosystems.
Before joining VIPC in 2020, Sean was George Mason University's Associate Vice President for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, where he oversaw four regional entrepreneurship incubators, the Office of Technology Transfer, and student-focused entrepreneurship programs. Prior to joining Mason in 2016, Sean served as Senior Investment Director for Virginia Venture Partners (then CIT GAP Funds). Sean has over 20 years of investment and startup experience. He has founded two companies and has worked with several others in senior roles ranging from sales and marketing to product management, supply chain, and finance. From 1999 to 2003, Sean was a principal at Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds, a $200m early-stage venture capital firm focused on the telecommunications and IT industries.
Sean holds an AB degree from Princeton University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
